Additionally, Eglin has outstanding facilities including a teaching hospital, large marina complex, top notch gym and fitness facilities and one of the top commissaries in the DOD.

Top Ten List: Why Military Families Like Living in the Eglin AFB, Destin, Niceville Area

What are the top ten reasons to live in the Eglin, AFB area?  Okaloosa County is home to military personnel from all services including personnel stationed at Eglin, AFB, Hurlburt Field, Duke Field as well as the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group near Crestview.  So you have orders to the area and you want to know more about it.  Well, many people will be envious of you and they may feel like you just found the elusive golden ticket.  The Eglin area is one of the most desired locations to be stationed at in the United States.  Your next question is why do people like the Emerald Coast area?   Here is my top ten list:

1. Nice weather – Warm sunny weather is hard to complain about.
2. Beautiful beaches – The soft white sand and clear emerald waters make the beaches here among the best in the world.
3. Top schools – The schools in Okaloosa County are consistently the top in the state of Florida.  The area attracts wonderful teachers and the well grounded demographics of the student body help produce an atmosphere where learning and achieving is the norm.
4. Easy commute/low traffic – If you are coming from a long commute area like D.C. you will appreciate not living in gridlock.  The new bypass around Niceville will make it even better.
5. Low crime – No place is perfect but crime here is below average compared to other parts of the country.
6. Outstanding recreation – Bay, bayous, rivers, and Gulf offer great recreational opportunities for boating, fishing, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc.  Additionally, there are many more activities available such as golfing, hiking, biking, tennis and the list goes on and on.  If you like to stay active this place is for you.
7. Great shopping – While this is no metropolitan area it does have good shopping for its size.  Some examples include: Silver Sands Outlets, Destin Commons, Santa Rosa Mall, Uptown Station and Grand Boulevard Town Center.
8. Base facilities – The area bases have great facilities.  The Commissary at Eglin is one of the best in the world.  The hospital on Eglin is a teaching hospital with more capability than a clinic.  Eglin has 3 marinas, an Olympic size swimming pool and a top notch gym facility.
9. Nightlife – being near one of the top tourist destinations in the South has some advantages.  The area has a plethora of outstanding restaurants, oyster bars and nightspots.
10. Hometown atmosphere – One of the best things many people like about the area is the friendly hometown atmosphere here.  This area is mostly made up of:  veterans, DOD civilians, contractors with a connection to the military or descendants of the military.   So if you are military or connected to the military then this is your hometown.  Furthermore, the community is very patriotic and they will make you feel at home here.  There is a reason why they call Niceville…Niceville.
